Introducing House of Cards Wines, a fun and youthful winery in the Margaret River Region with top-quality wines
On a recent trip to Margaret River at the end of last year I stayed with my good friends Sofie and Mat. Mat is studying viticulture in Margaret River, and at the time of my visit he was working on the cellar door at House of Cards, a newish winery in the Yallingup area that I’d never been to before.
It turns out I’d been missing out over the almost-three years since House of Cards opened on Christmas Eve of 2011. From the moment I walked through the garden and stepped into the small light and airy cellar door room, I had a feeling it would become one of my favourite Margaret River wineries. And let me tell you – the wines I tasted did not disappoint!
The House of Cards Cellar Door Experience
The cellar door at House of Cards is very small with a light, airy and modern feel to it. When we visited, the room was open onto the garden with views of the fields and bush beyond, and a gentle breeze blew through which was most welcome on a hot summer’s day.
The cellar door room doubles as an arty homewares shop. I liked how the “cards” theme carries through the art, homewares and gifts on display for sale but I chose not to buy anything.
And now for the most important thing… The Wines!
I tasted almost the full range, and although I was told the reds were the best (and yes they were very good), my favourites happened to be the 2014 ‘The Joker’ Sauvignon Blanc, which I thought was beautifully balanced and crisp, and also the 2013 ‘Queen of Diamonds’ sparkling.
I bought a bottle of the Queen of Diamonds for my family’s Christmas lunch, and ended up regretting later not also buying a bottle of the Joker Sauv Blanc!
The grapes used for House of Cards wines are grown on a single vineyard planted in 1997 in the Yallingup sub-region of the Margaret River Wine Region. The varietals grown on the vineyard include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.
The Story Behind House of Cards
House of Cards Wine is a small boutique winery owned and operated by a young couple, Travis and Elizabeth Wray. The owners are personally involved in every aspect of their winery. From the quality of the wines, to the bright and modern yet cosy cellar door, to the exquisitely designed labels on the wine bottles – the care and attention to detail carries through.
The name cards theme and the name “House of Cards” is inspired by the element of chance in wine making: the dependence on the weather and conditions that change from year to year.
Visiting House of Cards Wine
The House of Cards winery and cellar door is located in the Yallingup wine sub-region, south of Yallingup and north-east of Cowaramup. You’ll find it on the west side of Caves Road, between the intersections of Caves Road with Quininup/Abbey Farm Road and Johnson Road. The driveway to the cellar door begins off Quininup Road.
