Little Salmon Bay is a long way from the settlements and only has a very small beach, but it’s one of Rottnest Island’s most popular bays for good reason!
If you catch the “Island Explorer” bus around Rottnest Island looking for the perfect place to stop for a swim, chances are you’ll be tempted by Little Salmon Bay. The road skirts the back of the beach, so you hop straight off the bus and onto the sand.
In the middle of summer, by late morning the beach fills up with busloads of happy families and snorkellers. But during less busy times on the island, it’s peaceful and actually feels quite wild and secluded.
Swimming and Snorkeling at Little Salmon Bay
Swimming at Little Salmon Bay is a dream, because it’s so sheltered from both wind and waves, and the water is always crystal-clear.
The low limestone cliffs along both edges of the bay shelter the water from all northerly and easterly winds, making it an idyllic paradise on summer mornings.
It does get quite choppy and windy when a southerly or south-westerly is blowing, but I happen to like Little Salmon Bay so much that it’s the one Rottnest beach where I just have to stop for a swim, no matter what the weather is like – even if I’m riding past on a freezing cold day in the middle of winter!
Beneath the surface of that beautiful clear water, fish school over huge banks of pocillopora coral in the middle of the bay, and hide amongst the seaweed and in the shadows of the limestone reefs enclosing the sheltered lagoon.
The pictures on this page of reefs and clear, turquoise water will probably give you some idea of how good the snorkeling is, but for information on where to snorkel and pictures of the fish and coral you’ll see, click through to the Little Salmon Bay Snorkeling Guide.
